Oklahoma Hmong New Years 2022
Oklahoma Hmong New Year 10/29/2022-10/30/2022
Hmong New Year 2022 was the biggest in Oklahoma.
The location of the New Year is different this year. It was taken place in a small town called Inola. It’s Hmong owned land in the countryside. Compared to the previous years, this 2022 New Year has more booths, more food vendors, and more people whether they were in town or coming from out of town. There were so many people that the parking lot was packed and they had to tear down another fence just so they could fit more cars to park.
The weather condition was cloudy and it did end up raining on the first day of the Hmong New Year which was a bummer. It was pretty chilly with the weather of 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Up north people may not think it’s cold but it’s considered cold for people living in Oklahoma.
I went to New Year with my parents and my little sister. We were planning on meeting other family members there as well. When I arrived the first thing I did was I headed straight to the food vendors. Although we had more food vendors this year, the line was long I waited an hour in a half just to get my food. Perfect timing for me because by the time I got my food it started raining. After eating I waited for the rain to wind down, then I went to go meet up with my friends and took photos. My goal at New Years’ was to meet with one of my favorite Hmong comedian named Ah, I’m sure many of you know her. She is a funny person and I love her personality! I finally saw Ah, the funny thing was that she was next in line for the porta-potty! Haha, I was so excited and too scared to go up to her and ask for a photo together. But luckily I did go and we took photos together before she went to go use the bathroom. I had the chance to tell her that I am a big fan of hers.
Later I saw Chenning Xiong and Supryze (Hmong singers), I am a big fan of Chenning’s music and I thought I wouldn’t get to see him because every time he is in town I would miss my chance to go see him when he goes sing at events. Luckily I saw him at New Year’s taking photos with fans! I finally went up and took a photo with him, it was a dream come true! My only goal was to see Ah but I also got to see Chenning and I was more than pleased. It made my day to finally see Chenning at least once in my lifetime.
After taking photos with Chenning, my family and I went around looking at what vendors were selling. I bought a Hmong keychain and some Hmong design stickers. Took some more photos with friends and family, then I finally went home after a long day. I didn’t go to the New Year the next day because there was a Hmong golf tournament that was happening during the same day as the New Year. I went to go watch and support my little brother and cousin play the golf tournament instead. Overall, the Hmong New Year was a great, fun, new, and memorable experience. Will go again next year just to see what else they have or if it’s going to be at a different location. If you haven’t had the chance to come to see the Oklahoma New Year you all should come next year, it will be fun!
